overcoming obstacles about running

A week ago, I ran 5 miles for the first time ever in my life! I am not sure whether I had a physical or mental block, but I haven’t been able to run since the 5 mile run a week ago. It seemed too hard. I felt too sore. I felt too weak. I didn’t have enough energy. I wouldn’t be able to keep up. on and on and on. I had mental and physical reasons why I couldn’t run each day since the last run. But today, I did it. I ran again. I ran .8 miles which isn’t impressive by any means. Oh, but it is! I ran without reservations or judgment. I walked about .8 miles at which point I decided, come what may, I’m just going to run rest of the way home. I jogged at the slowest pace I could jog. I was afraid I might be running out of breathe or my knees might be hurting. But I kept moving, I kept jogging, I was running again.

Do you ever find yourself in a position where you feel you can’t do something? even something that you have done before? I was experiencing that with running this past week. But it could also be about writing dissertation or writing sermons. Sometimes before I get started, I could feel like I can’t do it, even if it’s something I had done before. But why is that fear there preventing us from moving ahead? I had a mental block about running more than I could handle. So I ran a shorter distance. And now I know it still feels good to run, and that I can still run even in my late forties!

Don’t let your mind or your body set limits on what you can do, especially if you know you are being prevented by some kind of fear. If you can’t over come obstacle, for example to run 5 miles, then run half a mile. If you can’t write or read at all, then just do 5-10 minutes. I am preaching next two weeks. And there is a small voice in me that wants to have me believe I can’t manage everything. But I’m just going to take baby steps. I’m just going to take a little piece of the big project I can’t do. Then I will be able to do the little piece of it, taking baby steps, and I will be closer, not further away from accomplishing my goal. Don’t give up! Strive towards the goal, the prize for which God intends for you! Strive towards the goal, and the prize for which will make you healthier and happier. Start today.
